AC Milan in 2002/03 UEFA Champions League (Road to Victory)

A manager like Carlo Ancelotti, former AC Milan player between 1987 and 1992, the first man in football history to win the Champions Cup both as player and manager with the same team.
A team full of champions: a goalkeeper at his peak (Dida), a strong defense (Maldini, Nesta, Serginho), classy midfielders (Seedorf, Rui Costa, Pirlo) and 4 legendary goalscorers (Inzaghi, Shevchenko, Rivaldo and Tomasson).
After the preliminary round against Slovan Liberec, AC Milan dominated the first 4 match days of Group G, by winning in La Coruna and Munich, 12 points in 4 wonderful games. In the 2nd Group Stage the same score, by reaching the qualification only in 4 matches, with two wins against Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund. 3-2 in the last minute against Ajax in quarter finals, drammatic battle with Internazionale ("The Derby of Milan") in semifinals. In Manchester (28 May 2003), the first historical italian final of UEFA Champions League, ended to penalties against Juventus FC. Dida saved 3 times, then Shevchenko scored the final penalty kick. 7th Champions Cup for AC Milan, 9 years after the triumph of Athens against Cruyiff's Barcelona. Paolo Maldini lifted up the cup 40 years later then his father Cesare, captain of AC Milan in 1963.

2002-2003 Champions League: Basel and Liverpool Goals

Together in Group B of the 1st Group Stage of 2002/03 UEFA Champions League, Basel eliminates Liverpool shocking Europe. We can say that David defeats Goliath. Never before a swiss team reached top 16 of Champions League. An historical risult for a great team coached by Christian Gross and leaded by the goals of Julio Rossi, Christian Giménez and Hakan Yakin. They will finish 2nd Group Stage with the same points of Juventus and Deportivo La Coruna, but not enough to reach quarter finals.




Liverpool FC arrived 3rd in Group B, by losing 2 times with Valencia CF, so with 1 point less then FC Basel. On match day 6 big match in St. Jakob's Stadion, but the final result (3-3) promoted Basel and eliminated Liverpool. Owen, Smicer, Baros and Heskey goals were not enough for the team coached by Gerard Houllier.

Reigning champion in Premier League, 1st in Group A of the 1st Group Stage (above Borussia Dortmund, Auxerre and PSV Eindhoven), one of the favourite teams for the final victory. Gunners will be eliminated in the last match day of their group, by losing in Valencia.

2002-2003 Champions League: Juventus and Newcastle United Goals

Together in Group E of the 1st Group Stage of 2002/03 UEFA Champions League, these two black & white teams take separate ways in the 2nd Group Stage.

Juventus places 2nd in Group D (dominated by Manchester United), but they defeat Barcelona and Real Madrid in the knockout stage, reaching their 7th European Cup's final, after 5 years of absence. The first, historical, italian final (against AC Milan). A great team, italian champion in 2002 and 2003, coached by Marcello Lippi and full of champions like Del Piero, Trezeguet, Nedved, Davids, Di Vaio, Thuram and Buffon.



Newcastle United is maybe the strongest team in the club history. Bobby Robson on the bench, Shearer and Bellamy as goalscorers. First partecipation to UEFA Champions League, they places 3rd in Group A of the 2nd Group Stage, behind Barcelona and Internazionale.
